The Healthy Bourbon County Action Team, funded by KDADS, is leading a coalition to reduce youth vaping among students in grades 6–12 in Bourbon County. With local vaping rates nearly double the state average—especially among young girls—the initiative focuses on prevention through education, reduced access, and shifting community norms. Strategies include youth-led campaigns, school programs, parent and retailer engagement, and public awareness. The goal is to significantly lower youth vaping rates by 2028 by empowering students and building community support, with a special focus on high-risk groups.
We are currently working with USD 234, Fort Scott High School on Vaping Prevention Program.
“ This collaboration is supported through the Kansas Prevention Collaborative–Community Initiative (KPCCI) Implementation Grant, administered by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS). The purpose of this funding is to strengthen effective, culturally competent prevention strategies that reduce youth substance use—including vaping, underage drinking, and other high-risk behaviors—while promoting positive youth development and resilience.”
