The Healthy Bourbon County Action Team: Empowering Communities

Expanding Access Through Community-Led Transportation Solutions

COPE & Local Health Equity Action Teams (LHEATs)

In Southeast Kansas, many residents—particularly older adults, people with disabilities, and those in rural or low-income areas—face transportation barriers that limit access to essential services. Through the COPE initiative, Local Health Equity Action Teams (LHEATs) in Bourbon, Cherokee, Labette, and Montgomery Counties partnered with community organizations to launch public transit services three days a week. These services, provided by SEK-CAP, help residents reach jobs, healthcare, shopping, and education. Local successes include expanded service routes, county-wide partnerships, and improved access across county lines. Reliable transportation promotes health, independence, and stronger rural communities.
